News: New Durigutti Reviews from Stephen Tanzer!

2009 Durigutti Cabernet Sauvignon Mendoza, 90 Points Bright dark red. Sweeter on the nose than the 2010, offering scents and flavors of currant, plum, mocha and earth. At once saline and sweet, and a bit more concentrated than the 2010. The fat middle palate is nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Finishes broad, spicy and long, with a fine dusting of tannins that spread out to coat the palate. Lovely balance here. 2010 Durigutti Malbec Mendoza, 90 Points Bright dark red. Perfumed aromas of blackberry, currant, violet, licorice and menthol lifted by hints of herbs and pepper. Supple, ripe and nicely concentrated, with mid-palate sweetness restrained by vigorous, harmonious acidity. Finishes thicker than the 2010 cabernet, with fine-grained tannins and lovely lingering fruits and herbs. 2008 Durigutti Malbec Reserva Mendoza, 92 Points Bright red-ruby. Pure, discreet aromas of black fruits and flowers; classy and vibrant. Silky on entry, then primary, fine-grained and deep in the middle, with a distinctly primary character and lovely definition of dark berry flavor. The seamless finish offers suave tannins, excellent energy and subtle building length. Beautifully balanced malbec with real class--not at all a blockbuster. And a great value.

Alberti 154 2010 Malbec - Wine Pick of the Week 3/12/2012
"Once again, Alberti 154 bested its competition at this moderate price. Pleasing, sweet berry flavors are complemented with light earth and juicy acidity. This and Alberti's tempranillo are both well made and drinking quite nicely already."

Winery: Brittan Vineyards (Oregon, USA)

A respected veteran of California’s wine industry (sixteen years as winemaker at Stag’s Leap, with long stints at Far Niente and St. Andrews as well), Robert Brittan searched for years to find the ideal site on which to grow cool-climate Pinot Noir and finally found it on a 128-acre Coastal Range hillside in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. He and his wife Ellen purchased the estate in December 2004, and have been loving stewards of it ever since, replanting close to 50% of the vineyard, fine tuning the viticultural practices, and improving the site’s clonal and rootstock combinations. The estate’s soils are a mixture of glacial deposits and volcanic material, with a predominant presence of broken basalt. They have east, south and west exposures to choose from on a cool, windy site. As a result Robert believes he has found a location where he can grow unique wines that truly speak of this place, bringing a new voice to the McMinnville AVA and helping form the style and definition of Pinot Noir from this recently designated region.

Wine: Basalt Block (Pinot Noir)

The Basalt block comes from the parts of the vineyard that have the heaviest concentration of broken sub-marine basalts, resulting in low yielding vines that produce intense flavors and layers of complexity. The Pinot Noir for the Basalt Block consists predominantly of the Pommard selection, blended with clonal selections 777 and 115. The vines are planted on Riparia Gloire and 101-14 rootstocks.

Wine: Gestalt Block (Pinot Noir)

The Gestalt Block Pinot Noir comes from the west-facing and most exposed blocks in the vineyard, resulting in a wine that will always be transparent to its vintage and the unique site where these vines are planted. The Pinot Noir for the Gestalt Block consists predominantly of clonal selections 115, 667 and 777 on 101-14 and 4453 rootstocks. These southwestern facing blocks stare down the arriving storms from the Pacific as they travel through the Van Duzer corridor.

Winery: Ermisch Family Cellars (Oregon, USA)

At Southern Wine Group we take pride in our ability to produce a number of the wines we represent. With our own Argentine and Mexican projects stronger than ever (Bodega Calle, La Yunta, Jubileo), we decided to take our love for cool climate Pinot Noir to the logical next step – making some right here in our home state of Oregon. Under the roof of the Carlton Winemaker’s Studio, industry veteran Robert Brittan acts as our consulting winemaker. Everyone in our small company has lent a hand in this project, from the sorting table, to cellar work, to bottling. We’ve always preferred complexity and character over power, and the Willamette Valley vineyard sources we're utilizing reflect that.

Winery: Bodega Bouza (Uruguay)

Was built in 1942 by Numa Pesquera following the model of a French chateaux. This family already managed the concept of "fine wine", front-line idea for the wines of Uruguay at that time. In 2002 we restored the building maintaining the original idea. We now have a blend of traditional concepts and the necessary technology to ensure the best modern vinification practices. Our view of life tells us that state of the art technology is not enough if it doesn't go hand in hand with a gentle handling of the fruit and conditions that allow minimal intervention in each and every process. With these principles, and keeping the highest standard of hygiene, we have managed to meet our final goal: maximum expression of the fruit in our wine and the adequate concentration for cellaring potential.

Winery: Barón Balché (Baja California, Mexico)

Barón Balché is one of the most important boutique producers in Baja California. Known as Vicente Fox's favorite winery, the winery got its start with the well-known Michel Rolland, who was their consultant for 4 years. Native Baja Californian, Jesús Rivera is their winemaker and is excellent at pinpointing the tastes and aromas he wants to bring forth in his wines. Many of Barón Balché's wines are extremely limited with productions starting at 100 cases per variety. Being the most sought after winery in Mexico, their wines suggest it in the price. Fortunately, the wines are well worth it. We offer a special selection for sale exclusively on our website. Our special online offer: We can deliver these fine wines to you at the exact same retail price you would pay at the winery. Why only enjoy these great wines while you are down in Baja California, when we have them available to purchase online and ship to your door?

Winery: Flaherty Wines (Chile)

Ed Flaherty and Jen Hoover first came to Chile in 1993 to work a harvest, and never left. Over the years, Ed has worked with some of the top wineries in the Chilean industry, including Cono Sur, Errázuriz, and now Viña Tarapacá. As an executive winemaker, Ed tends to spend more time in the office and tasting lab than in the winery. They started Flaherty in 2004 so that he could get his hands dirty again. Vinification takes place inside the garage of their Aconcagua Valley home. Flaherty is one of the few boutique wineries in Chile, and a founding member of M.O.V.I., Chile's exciting, fast-growing association of independent vintners.

Winery: Garage Wine Co. (Chile)

Derek Mossman and his wife Pilar Miranda are producing 1,500 cases of Carignan, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir per year with fruit sourced from small growers in Maule and Maipo. Winemaking here veers towards the "natural" spectrum - All wines are fermented with native yeast, see no additions of any kind, very little new wood, and are low in sulfites. Punch downs are by hand, and pressing is done in a small traditional basket. You may notice slight variation in bottle thickness and shape if you were to open up cases, as Derek Mossman takes recycling to the next level and actually reuses, bottling in salvaged used wine bottles in partnership with a recycling company located near the winery. Derek is also the founder of M.O.V.I. (Movimiento de Vinateros Independientes), Chile's exciting, fast-growing association of independent vintners.

Wine: Lot #27 Old Vine Carignan Field Blend (Carignan)

Sourced from 80 year old bush head vines from three sites, Caliboro, Sauzal, and Cauquenes. Derek works closely with these small farmers, plowing everything by horse. Visiting the Maule is like stepping back in time, many of these Carignan farmers are still making their own “home” wine in clay amorphae. Root systems are very deep (6-7 meters), which seems to be the only way Carignan gains complexity down there (deep roots from decades of time). 2010 saw relatively warm temperatures, and while quirky for Chile it is still very much a crowd pleaser. Mossman won the 2010 Geoffrey Roberts Travel Award to work with farmers to protect these vines in the chaos that followed the earthquake.

Lot # 28 is composed of mountain grown Cabernet Franc from Pirque in the Alto Maipo Valley. This is a long term contract the winery has from a small independent grower. The vines were originally planted by William Fevre 25 years ago via massal selection and sit in an ancient dried tributary of the Rio Clarillo riverbed. 2010 was a fairly warm year there. Irrigation is via classic Maipo flood technique, the farm has its own water direct from the gorge.

Winery: Viña Tabalí (Chile)

One of Chile’s most progressive independent producers, Vina Tabali is located six hours North of Santiago by car in the up-and-coming cool climate Limarí Valley appellation Founder Guillermo Luksic was the first person to plant vines in Limari in 1993. Since then the region has established itself as one of the country’s more interesting microclimates for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah. The Limari Valley sits at 700 feet elevation just southwest of the Atacama Desert, which is the driest place on Earth (no recorded rainfall in history), and begins five miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Soils here are alluvial, with large amounts of limestone present (a rarity in Chile).
All Tabali wines are estate grown and sourced from one of the winery’s three vineyards. Tabali Vineyard and El Espinal Vineyard sit close to the winery in the heart of the valley, and Guillermo’s new Talinay vineyard marks the valley’s extreme Western edge. Although the Limari Valley sits relatively close to the equator for a wine region and experiences intense UV light, summertime highs here rarely top 80 degrees thanks to the cooling effects of constant, intense, Humbolt current based wind and daily fog. Precipitation is almost nil, frost is unheard of. Combined these factors make the growing season here the longest and most drawn out in the world among fine wine regions (June harvests are a reality). The resulting slow ripening produces wine with staggering depth and detail.
The winery itself is gravity flow, ecologically designed, mostly outdoors, and located at the base of a dried creekbed. Rising star winemaker Felipe Muller allows Limari’s unique terroir to shine by practicing minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar.

Wine: Reserva (Pinot Noir)

Tabalí's newest release, this bottling comes from young vines planted on the oldest alluvial terrace of the Limari River. This fruit, combined with the valley's famously "cool" climate, minerality, and a limited use of oak (all neutral) makes for a racy Pinot Noir with personality and verve.

Wine: Reserva (Sauvignon Blanc)

Limarí's Limestone soil really makes a difference in this Sauvignon Blanc bottling. Beyond the wine's bright melon and citrus driven nose, there is an impressive core of minerality that one would not expect in a Chilean white - Stylistically the wine reminds us very much of a top notch Sancerre bottling.

Tabalí's Carmenère vineyards were planted in 1993 and 1997, and were to our knowledge the first intentionally planted Carmenere vines in Limarí. Carmenère grown in this climate seems to take on a mushroomy, earthy quality that we adore, and always shows a touch of the grape's signature herbaceousness.

Wine: Reserva Especial (Chardonnay)

Burgundian in style, Tabalí's Chardonnay has long been one of our favorite Chilean whites. This is another example of the positive effect Limari's limestone soil has on the region's wines. Cooling breezes from the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean provide the grapes with a balanced acidity you rarely see in Chilean Chardonnay. The wine is fermented and aged in a combination on new and used French Oak, and bottled after 10 months.

Winery: Viña Altaïr (Chile)

Viña San Pedro created Altaïr with the lofty goal of producing the most sought-after, critically acclaimed wine in Chile. Their gorgeous single estate vineyard is located appoximately 60 miles South of Santiago in the Alto Cachapoal Valley, in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. The winery combines traditional French technique and equipment with a modern gravity flow process. Perfectionist winemaker Anna Maria Cumsille has experience across the globe, with a resume that includes stages at Bordeaux's Chateau Margaux and Chateau La Louviere.
A boutique project in every sense of the word, the winery only releases two wines each year, Altaïr and Sideral, With their elegance and complexity, these small production wines attracted our attention several years ago, and we are very proud to import them into the United States.

Winery: Fabre Montmayou (Argentina)

Hervé Joyaux Fabre, owner and director of Fabre Montmayou, was born in Bordeaux, France to a family of wine negociants. When he arrived in Argentina in the early 90’s looking for opportunities to invest in vineyards and start a winery, he was impressed by the potential for Malbec in Mendoza, and shocked by the number of neglected top notch old vine vineyards available for purchase. At this time pulling out old vines and replanting with new higher yielding more predictable clones was all the rage. Within months he purchased the first of what would be many old vine, high elevation vineyard sites under his control - An impeccable 37 acre spread in Vistalba planted with original rootstock Malbec vines in 1908. A Patagonian winery was constructed in the Rio Negro region ten years later. At present the family owns 217 acres of vineyard land in Mendoza (Vistalba, Compuertas, Tupungato) and 122 acres in Patagonia (Allen, General Roca). All wines are estate grown, farmed using traditional methods without the use of herbicides, and fermented with native yeasts.

Winery: La Yunta Wines (Argentina)

The Spanish words, "La Yunta" signify a pair puling together for a common cause. This unique project was created in 2001 by Kirk Ermisch and winemaking friends as a way of showing the world the excellence and crisp, lively balance of the Torrontés grape. The project currently produces three wines: La Yunta Torrontés (a 100% Torrontés from La Rioja), La Yunta "Tinto" (a red blend with 3-7% Torrontés added for softness and aromatics), and La Yunta "Tardío" (a limited production late harvest Torrontés). A sparkling Torrontés will also be added to the lineup sometime in the near future.

Wine: La Yunta (Torrontés)

The Torrontés grape was first brought to Argentina in the late 1800's by Spanish immigrants. While most Argentine Torrontés is produced in La Salta, we prefer it from La Rioja. The region's more moderate climate produces a Torrontés that is much more "focused" on the palate and considerably drier than most. Careful vineyard management and native yeast fermentation make this Torrontés with Terroir!

The philosophy of quality over quantity, respect for the land, and honoring the winemaking traditions we have inherited from our forefathers is recognizable anywhere, from Sicily to Burgundy, and even in this tiny corner of Mendoza in Cruz de Piedra, inside the converted barn where Familia Marguery wines are produced.
Proprietor Guillermo Donnerstag can be found in the vineyard virtually any day of the year, and inside the bodega he is assisted by the skilled hands of enologist Pedro Rosell. Guillermo is extremely lucky with his access to high quality vineyards in La Consulta (Uco Valley) and Vistalba.
Winery: Durigutti (Argentina)

At their small winery in rural Luján, Héctor and Pablo Durigutti craft three small-production Malbecs and two of the country's best examples of Bonarda. Héctor is considered one of Argentina's top authorities with regards to both the Malbec and Bonarda grapes. He first became known for his work alongside Alberto Antonini as one of the co-founders of Altos Las Hormigas -the forward- thinking project that placed Argentine Malbec on the international map in the late nineties. With extensive experience in Europe (including a stint at Antinori), Héctor has developed a unique winemaking style that blends tradition with innovation. Héctor's young brother Pablo has quickly built a reputation for himself as well, with a star-studded resume including top names such as Rutini, Catena, and Cinco Tierras. Today both brothers are some of the country's most sought-after consulting enologists. This boutique project is their pride and joy.

Wine: Durigutti (Bonarda)

Bonarda vine cuttings were brought to Argentina by Italian immigrants from Piedmont in the late 1800s. Current thinking suggests that what is known as Bonarda in Argentina is in fact not related to the Italian grape of the same name, but instead a second Italian grape called Dolcetto, also from the Piedmont. Héctor and Pablo are passionate about the potential of Bonarda in Argentina, and use low yielding, late-picked fruit for this bottling.

Wine: Durigutti Clásico (Malbec)

Their standard Malbec bottling, Durigutti's Malbec "Clásico" represents what the brothers do best-combine elegance with a certain blue-collar rusticity. While this is in many ways due to the two differing backgrounds the brothers bring to the table, it is also largely due to the fruit. High altitude fruit from La Consulta adds structure, depth, and power, while bright fruit from Vistalba adds brightness and supple texture.

We are thrilled to offer you the new release of Héctor and Pablo's "Reserva" Malbec. Their intensely colored Malbec fruit from La Consulta makes up the majority of this blend, giving the wine substantial color, tannin, and attack. The two brothers' wines always show a fascinating "wildness" on the palate, and this 2007 is certainly no exception to that. Limited use of new wood allows the fruit to shine bright (70% of the wine sees barrels from last year's "Familia" bottling).

Winery: Fincas Don Martino (Argentina)

Fincas Don Martino is a creation of famed agronomist Mauricio Parodi and Buenos Aires Businessman Hugo Martino. The project began in 2002 when Parodi fell in love with the quality of fruit from "Viña Violeta", a small 18.5 acre vineyard in Agrelo, a sub-district within the Luján de Cuyo appellation of Mendoza. The vines, planted in 1926, are ungrafted Malbec clones originally brought to Argentina from France. The vineyard's high elevation (3,850 feet) allows the grapes to develop tremendous complexity via an extended growing season and large daily temperature fluctuations. In addition to the two Malbec wines they produce out of the "Vina Violeta" site, the winery has recently begun producing small quantities of old vine Semillon from a heritage vineyard in Perdriel, and a bit of old vine, dry-fermented Pedro Ximenez from Altamira. All are produced organically and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Winery: Carmelo Patti (Argentina)

If you are lucky enough to secure an appointment, a visit to Carmelo Patti's small, rustic winery in the heart of Lujan de Cuyo will without question be one of the more memorable wine tours of your life. Carmelo, one of Mendoza's great personalities, runs every corner of this quirky operation himself. Originally brought to Argentina on a small boat from Sicily when he was one year old, Carmelo was a catalyst for the rebirth of fine wine production in Mendoza in the eighties and is to this day one of the most respected enologists in the country. Carmelo's winemaking style is equally as unique as his character, and he insists on holding all wine until he deems it "ready" for release which means 4-5 years after harvest at the soonest for reds. We are able to import small allocations of each of this wines, a methode champenoise Sparkler, a leafy, textured Cabernet Sauvignon, a creamy Malbec, and his Bordeaux-style "Gran Assemblage".

Winery: Carlos Basso (Argentina)

Originally from Genoa, Italy, the Basso Family has been producing wine since 1922. In their beginning they owned the "Purísima" winery from where they sold wines in 220 liter wooden barrels. In 1935, Adolfo Basso, together with his brother Tulio, purchased the "Santa Ana" winery, eventually turning it into one of Argentina's largest bodegas. Seeking to simplify their lives and once again become involved in small production winemaking, the family sold "Santa Ana" in 1996. Using the profits from this sale the Basso's purchased and remodeled a small winery in Carrodilla, Mendoza the following year. Inside this space the "Carlos Basso" project was born. The winery is 100% estate, with two vineyards in Mendoza's Uco Valley. Carlos and his son Adolfo run the day to day operations of the winery.

The use of two separate vineyards in Argentina is a traditional practice to safeguard against the threat of hail. For the Basso family, it also allows them to make a more interesting blend by combining the attributes of two distinct microclimates. The dark, powerful fruit from their vineyard in San Carlos, matched with the softer, more nuanced fruit from their vineyard in Tunuyan, makes for a memorable wine.

Wine: Carlos Basso Rosé (Cabernet Sauvignon)

With its vibrant color and perfume, Basso's Cabernet Rosé is always one of our staples for summer nights on the patio. New to the Basso line, this saignee method rose was the creation of Adolfo Basso, who was inspired by the numerous French roses he repeatedly came across while interning in Napa Valley.

Wine: Tardío Late Harvest (Blend)

This Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, and Viognier based "tardío" is the creation of Adolfo Basso. Inspired by late harvest wine he helped to create with "staging" in Napa Valley, Adolfo saw great potential in the ability of the family's cool climate vineyard in Tunuyán to produce a honeyed, lush bottling. After several vintages it seems that they have the process dialed.

Wine: Vina Amalia Reserva (Cabernet Sauvignon)

Within Argentina the Basso family has always been known for their excellent Cabernet. With it's high elevation and Southern location, their vineyard in La Consulta (named Finca La Amalia) produces some of the most interesting Cabernet fruit in the country. Two separate pickings one week apart give the wine additional complexity and balance.

Wine: Signature (Blend)

This blend, the Basso family's top bottling, has traditionally only been available within Argentina because of limited supply. We were mesmerized by its complexity after tasting it out of barrel during a 2005 supplier visit, and begged the family for access to a small allocation each year. The cuvee showcases the freshness and complexity of their best Malbec and Cabernet blocks without the interference of excessive oak.

Winery: Bodega Calle (Argentina)

Bodega Calle is a small-lot, gravity-flow, red wine making studio located in the prized viticultural area of Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina Both a house and winery, Alberti 154 is the street address for this tiny, off the beaten path, well-kept secret. Ca' de Calle is Spanish for "House of Calle," named in honor of the winery founder, the late Ms. Elvira Calle, a famous businesswoman who owned the most important newspaper in Mendoza and ended her life as a prominent philanthropist. The winery concentrates on varietal wines and premium red blends sourced from the viticultural areas where each varietal in question grows best. All wines are made with the use of gravity and are never pumped to deliver the grapes to the fermentation tank. This process, termed "gravity flow winemaking," allows Bodega Calle wines to be notably softer and less bitter than their conventionally pumped peers.

Wine: Alberti 154 (Torrontés)

The 2010 vintage of Alberti 154 Torrontes was sourced from two separate terroirs - La Rioja and La Salta. Grapes from La Rioja offer citrus notes and acidity, while grapes from La Salta offer tropical fruit notes and weight.

Wine: Alberti 154 (Tempranillo)

Roughly half of Mendoza's population is of Spanish descent, and over the years a number of Tempranillo vines have been planted in the region. This bottling, from an heirloom quality parral style vineyard in Altamira, is packed with lush cherry and raspberry fruit. A long growing season, very cold nights and low yields helped create a wine that is extremely concentrated.

Wine: Ca de Calle Reserva (Blend)

Ca' de Calle, (Calle's Place), is named in honor of the lady that shared our vision and helped turn it into reality. In 2001, we sought to recondition a historic winery in the heart of Mendoza's acclaimed wine district, Luján de Cuyo. This is a small-lot, gravity flow, red wine production studio where we strive to achieve perfection with every successive year. This is just our fourth effort at a Reserva wine and is a delicious blend of the best wines under our roof. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it.

Wine: Alberti 154 (Syrah)

2010 marks the fourth Syrah vintage at Bodega Elvira Calle. Access to a superb vineyard in Agrelo allows us to make a small quantity of concentrated, memorable wine.

Wine: Alberti 154 (Merlot)

Merlot is such an overlooked varietal in Mendoza, yet the region's vineyards often churn out stunningly great examples. The thousands of acres of the grapes planted in Tupungato attest to this. Like the other wines from Alberti 154, this is small production value-driven wine at its best!

Wine: Alberti 154 (Malbec)

For the 2010 vintage Bodega Calle had access to old vine Perdriel fruit, which offers up rich mocha and plum notes. A small amount of young fruit from La Consulta provides structure and tannin, while limited oak influence keeps the wine bright and fruity. We cannot think of a better everyday "house" Malbec!

Wine: Alberti 154 (Cabernet Sauvignon)

A short drive East of Bodega Calle, Lunlunta offers a nice microclimate for Cabernet Sauvignon production with its warm weather. This appellation is often overlooked as it is sandwiched between the more famous Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu sub-districts. The grapes used in this wine are from an organically farmed 60+ year old parral style vineyard.
